Lycium barbarum
Light: Full sun to light shade; morning sun with afternoon shade is preferable in Phoenix.
Water: Water deeply, then let the upper few inches of soil dry before watering again. Established plants tolerate some drought, but regular irrigation supports fruit production, especially during Phoenix summers. Avoid constantly wet soil.
Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil; tolerates moderately alkaline conditions. Avoid poorly drained clay and excessive fertilizer.
Mature size: 6–10 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide; may grow larger or spread by suckers if not pruned.
Bloom: Flowers from late spring into fall, followed by berries; extreme summer heat may interrupt flowering and fruit set. Fruiting often begins within 2–3 years.
Evergreen / deciduous: Deciduous; typically loses its leaves in winter and may shed foliage during severe heat or drought.
Growth rate: Moderate to fast with adequate water.
