Light: Full sun to light shade; in Phoenix, morning sun with light afternoon shade helps prevent scorching, especially near heat-reflecting walls.
Water: Low water once established. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Occasional summer irrigation benefits Phoenix plantings; reduce watering greatly in winter.
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential. Use gravelly, sandy, or rocky soil; plant on a raised mound where native soil drains poorly.
Mature size: Approximately 2–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide per rosette; the flower stalk can reach 15–20 feet.
Bloom: Each rosette blooms once after many years, often several decades, usually in late spring or summer. The flowering rosette then dies, while any offsets survive.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.
Growth rate: Slow.
