Light: Bright filtered light or morning sun with afternoon shade in Phoenix. Avoid intense afternoon sun and reflected heat from walls or pavement.
Water: Water deeply, then let soil dry between waterings. In Phoenix, provide occasional supplemental summer irrigation; water much less during cool weather. Avoid constantly wet soil.
Soil: Very well-drained sandy or gravelly soil. Use a freely draining cactus mix in containers and avoid heavy, poorly drained clay.
Mature size: Approximately 3–5 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide, excluding the flower stalk; offsetting colonies can spread wider.
Bloom: Blooms once per rosette after many years, often 10–20 or longer. The flowering rosette dies afterward, but offsets can continue growing.
