Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade in Phoenix. Protect from intense reflected heat and harsh summer afternoon sun, which can scorch the variegated foliage.
Water: Low water once established. Water deeply, then allow soil to dry thoroughly; provide occasional supplemental irrigation during prolonged summer heat. Reduce watering sharply in winter and keep water out of the crown.
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential. Use gritty, mineral-rich cactus soil in containers; plant on a raised mound where native soil drains poorly.
Mature size: Approximately 1–2 feet tall and 1.5–2 feet wide, excluding the flower stalk.
Bloom: Blooms once at maturity, usually after many years or decades. Timing varies with growing conditions; the flowering rosette dies afterward.
