Care Instructions

Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade is best in Phoenix. Avoid reflected heat and intense western exposure, which can scorch the foliage.

Water: Low water once established. Water deeply, then let soil dry thoroughly; provide occasional supplemental irrigation during prolonged hot, dry weather. Water sparingly in winter and keep water out of the crown.

Soil: Excellent drainage is essential. Use gritty, mineral-rich soil; plant on a mound or raised bed where native soil is heavy or compacted.

Mature size: Approximately 3–5 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide; allow room for its armed leaves.

Bloom: Blooms once after many years, often decades. The flowering rosette dies afterward; any established offsets can continue growing.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.

Growth rate: Slow.
