Care Instructions

Light: Full sun to light shade; afternoon shade is beneficial in Phoenix, especially for variegated forms. Acclimate gradually to direct sun.

Water: Low water once established; water deeply, then let soil dry thoroughly. Reduce watering sharply in winter and avoid watering during cold spells.

Soil: Very well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil; use raised beds or mounds where drainage is poor.

Mature size: Typically 15–30 feet tall and 8–15 feet wide in favorable outdoor conditions; smaller in containers.

Bloom: Small, inconspicuous flowers may appear in spring to early summer on mature plants; flowering is uncommon in cultivation.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen succulent stems; small leaves near branch tips are temporary and drop during drought or cool weather.

Growth rate: Moderate; faster with warmth and appropriate summer irrigation.
