Light: Full sun; tolerates light shade. Acclimate nursery-grown specimens gradually to intense Phoenix sun.
Water: Low water once established. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry thoroughly between irrigations; newly planted specimens need closer moisture monitoring. Reduce watering substantially in winter.
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential; sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil preferred. Tolerates alkaline soil. Plant on a raised mound where drainage is poor.
Mature size: Typically 10–15 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide; flowering stalks extend above the crown.
Bloom: Mature plants may bloom in late spring to early summer, though not necessarily every year. Flowering does not kill the plant.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.
Growth rate: Slow; trunk development takes many years.
