Description
A tropical climbing cactus, Selenicereus undatus, with three-sided green stems and red-skinned, white-fleshed dragon fruit. Requires protection from Phoenix’s intense afternoon sun and winter freezes.
Bloom Time
Late spring through fall; flowers open at night and close by morning
Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade; approximately 30–50% shade cloth helps prevent sunburn during Phoenix summers.
Water: Water deeply when the upper 1–2 inches of soil dry during warm-weather growth. Reduce watering substantially in cool weather; never leave roots waterlogged.
Soil: Loose, well-drained soil enriched with compost. For containers, use cactus mix amended with pumice or perlite and some organic matter.
Mature size: Climbing stems can reach 10–20 feet or longer. Usually trained on a sturdy 5–6-foot support with a canopy approximately 4–8 feet wide.
Bloom: Large night-blooming flowers appear in flushes from late spring through fall under favorable conditions. Cuttings often begin flowering within 1–3 years; extreme heat can reduce flowering and fruit set.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen; green stems remain year-round unless damaged by cold or sunburn.
Growth rate: Fast in warm weather with adequate moisture and nutrition; slows during winter and extreme summer heat.
