Care Instructions

Light: Full sun, ideally at least 6 hours daily; light afternoon shade can help in Phoenix’s hottest exposures, but too much shade causes floppy growth.

Water: Low water once established; water deeply, then allow soil to dry between waterings. Provide regular establishment irrigation and occasional supplemental deep watering during prolonged summer heat.

Soil: Well-drained sandy, gravelly, or loamy soil; tolerates alkaline soils. Avoid poorly drained clay and excessive fertilizer.

Mature size: 3–5 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide; compact cultivars remain smaller.

Bloom: Late spring through fall, often with reduced flowering during extreme Phoenix summer heat.

Evergreen / deciduous: Deciduous to semi-deciduous in mild Phoenix winters; woody stems may persist after leaves drop.

Growth rate: Moderate to fast during the growing season.
