Light: Full sun to light shade; light afternoon shade can reduce scorching in Phoenix’s hottest exposures.
Water: Very low water once established. Water deeply but infrequently during prolonged summer drought, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep mostly dry in winter.
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential; sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil preferred. Tolerates alkaline desert soils; avoid soggy clay or low spots.
Mature size: Approximately 3–6 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide; may spread farther with age.
Bloom: Spring, typically March through May in Phoenix.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen cactus with persistent pads; tiny true leaves are short-lived.
Growth rate: Slow to moderate, depending on water and growing conditions.
