Light: Full sun to partial shade; in Phoenix, provide morning sun and afternoon shade, especially away from reflected heat.
Water: Moderate water; irrigate deeply when the upper few inches of soil dry. Needs regular summer irrigation in Phoenix and is not a low-water desert shrub. Reduce watering in winter.
Soil: Well-drained soil enriched with compost; avoid waterlogged soil. Mulch the root zone, keeping mulch away from stems.
Mature size: Typically 6–10 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide; may grow larger in frost-free locations or remain smaller with pruning and winter dieback.
Bloom: Usually summer through fall, potentially longer in frost-free conditions; extreme heat or drought may reduce flowering.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen in frost-free climates; may lose leaves or die back during Phoenix winter freezes.
Growth rate: Fast with warmth and adequate water.
