Light: Full sun; thrives in Phoenix heat and reflected sunlight.
Water: Very low water once established; rainfall often suffices, with occasional deep watering during prolonged hot drought. Newly planted specimens need supplemental water while rooting; allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings.
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential; prefers rocky, gravelly, or sandy soil and tolerates alkaline conditions. Avoid poorly drained clay and low spots.
Mature size: Typically 10–20 feet tall and 8–15 feet wide.
Bloom: Primarily March through June in Phoenix; may bloom even when leafless.
Evergreen / deciduous: Drought-deciduous; leaves emerge after rain and drop as soil dries, sometimes several times each year.
Growth rate: Slow to moderate; growth increases with favorable moisture and established roots.
