Light: Full sun; provide at least 6 hours daily. In Phoenix, avoid sites with intense reflected heat from west-facing walls, especially for young plants.
Water: Water deeply and regularly during establishment. Once established, allow the upper several inches of soil to dry between deep waterings; provide supplemental irrigation during Phoenix’s prolonged summer heat. Avoid frequent shallow watering.
Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil; tolerates alkaline soil. Avoid waterlogged locations and heavily compacted clay. Plant with the root flare at or slightly above surrounding grade.
Mature size: Approximately 8–10 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide after about 10 years; may eventually reach 25–30 feet tall and approximately 3 feet wide over several decades.
Bloom: Produces small pollen cones, generally in late winter to spring, rather than true flowers.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.
