Light: Bright shade or gentle morning sun; protect from Phoenix afternoon sun and reflected heat.
Water: Moderate to regular water; irrigate deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil begin to dry. Water more frequently during extreme heat, especially in containers; avoid soggy soil.
Soil: Well-drained soil enriched with compost. Mulch the root zone, keeping mulch away from stems; strongly alkaline soil may cause iron chlorosis.
Mature size: Typically climbs 10–20 feet or more with support and spreads 3–6 feet or more; readily maintained smaller with pruning.
Bloom: Mature climbing growth may produce inconspicuous flowers inside fig-like structures; flowering is uncommon on regularly trimmed juvenile growth.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen; foliage and stems may suffer damage during hard freezes.
Growth rate: Moderate while establishing, then fast with adequate moisture and protection from intense heat.
