Light: Full sun to light shade; afternoon shade is beneficial in Phoenix, especially near heat-reflecting walls. Acclimate nursery-grown plants gradually to direct sun.
Water: Low water once established. Water deeply but infrequently during prolonged summer drought, allowing soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Reduce watering substantially in winter; avoid wetting the crown.
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential. Tolerates sandy, gravelly, and alkaline soils; use a raised mound where native soil drains poorly.
Mature size: Approximately 5–7 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide, excluding the flower stalk; allow ample clearance for spiny leaves.
Bloom: Blooms once at maturity, usually after 15–25 years or longer. The flowering rosette dies afterward; any established offsets continue growing.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.
Growth rate: Slow to moderate; growth increases with warmth and occasional deep irrigation.
