Light: Bright filtered shade or gentle morning sun with afternoon shade. Avoid intense afternoon sun and reflected heat from walls or pavement.
Water: Moderate water needs; irrigate deeply when the upper 1–2 inches of soil become dry. Water more frequently during establishment and extreme summer heat, but avoid constantly wet soil.
Soil: Well-drained soil amended with compost. Tolerates a range of soil textures; mulch the root zone while keeping mulch away from stems.
Mature size: Typically 5–10 feet tall and wide if unpruned; can be maintained smaller. May climb considerably higher when supported.
Bloom: Small, inconspicuous flowers in late spring to early summer; flowering may be sparse or absent on regularly clipped plants.
