Light: Bright filtered shade; gentle early-morning sun in cooler months is acceptable. Protect from afternoon sun, reflected heat, and hot, drying winds.

Soil: Acidic, organic-rich, well-drained soil, ideally pH 5.5–6.5. In Phoenix, a large container with an acidic potting mix is generally more practical than planting in native alkaline soil. Mulch without covering the trunk.
