Light: Full sun; tolerates light shade but flowers best in direct sun.
Water: Very low water once established; often survives on rainfall. Water deeply but infrequently during establishment. Occasional summer irrigation can retain foliage; let soil dry thoroughly between waterings.
Soil: Well-drained sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil; tolerates alkaline soils. Avoid soggy soil and heavily amended planting holes.
Mature size: 2–4 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide; flower stalks rise above the foliage.
Bloom: Primarily late winter through spring, usually February–May in Phoenix; occasional repeat flowering after rain.
Evergreen / deciduous: Drought-deciduous; often drops leaves during hot, dry weather but may remain leafy with occasional supplemental water.
Growth rate: Fast, especially with winter and spring moisture.
