Care Instructions

Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade in Phoenix; protect from intense western exposure and reflected heat.

Water: High water needs, especially during Phoenix summers. Water deeply and frequently enough to keep the root zone evenly moist but never waterlogged; reduce watering substantially during cool weather.

Soil: Deep, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Mulch generously, keeping mulch away from the pseudostem; avoid poorly drained sites and salt buildup.

Mature size: Typically 12–20 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide; suckering clumps can spread wider unless managed.

Bloom: Flowers after a pseudostem reaches maturity, often in 15–24 months under favorable conditions; Phoenix heat and winter cold can delay flowering. Fruit needs several additional warm months to ripen.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen in frost-free conditions; foliage is damaged by frost, and stronger freezes can kill pseudostems. Established underground rhizomes may survive with protection.

Growth rate: Fast during warm weather with adequate moisture and nutrients; slows markedly in winter and under heat or drought stress.
