Light: Full sun to light shade; afternoon shade is beneficial in Phoenix, especially for young plants and container specimens. Acclimate gradually to direct sun.
Water: Low water; water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Provide occasional irrigation during warm-season growth; keep nearly dry in winter. Avoid watering more frequently simply because temperatures rise.
Soil: Very well-drained, gritty or gravelly soil. Plant on a raised mound where native soil is heavy or compacted; use cactus mix amended with pumice in containers.
Mature size: Typically 2–3 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide as an established clump; hybrid size may vary.
Bloom: Primarily spring to early summer, sometimes in repeat flushes. Flowering begins once plants are sufficiently mature.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen succulent with persistent green stems; no conspicuous foliage.
Growth rate: Moderate with warmth and appropriate irrigation; slower under very dry conditions.
