Light: Full sun to light shade; afternoon shade helps prevent scorching in Phoenix, especially near heat-reflecting walls.
Water: Low water; water deeply but infrequently during warm weather, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep nearly dry in winter.
Soil: Very well-drained, gritty or gravelly soil; avoid heavy clay and locations where water collects.
Mature size: Typically 2–3 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide; old clumps may spread farther.
Bloom: Large flowers appear primarily in spring, sometimes continuing into early summer; individual blooms open at night and usually last into the following day.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen succulent with persistent green stems.
