Agave desmettiana 'Variegata'
Light: Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal in Phoenix; protect from intense reflected heat and harsh western exposure.
Water: Low water once established. Water deeply, then allow soil to dry completely; occasional summer irrigation improves appearance. Reduce watering substantially in winter.
Soil: Very well-drained sandy or gravelly soil; use cactus mix for containers. Avoid heavy, poorly drained soil and water collecting around the crown.
Mature size: Approximately 3–4 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide, excluding the flower stalk; offset colonies can spread wider.
Bloom: Blooms once at maturity, often after 8–15 years or longer. The flowering rosette dies afterward, but offsets can continue growing.
Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.
Growth rate: Moderate for an agave; faster with warmth and occasional deep watering.
