Care Instructions

Light: Full sun to light shade; in Phoenix, light afternoon shade helps prevent scorching, especially near heat-reflecting walls.

Water: Low water once established. Water deeply but infrequently during hot, dry weather, allowing soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Reduce watering substantially in winter.

Soil: Very well-drained sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil. Plant on a raised mound if drainage is poor; avoid moisture-retentive soil around the crown.

Mature size: Approximately 3–5 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide, excluding the flower stalk.

Bloom: Blooms once at maturity, usually after many years or decades. The flowering rosette dies afterward; any offsets may survive.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.

Growth rate: Slow to moderate, depending on warmth and water availability.
