Care Instructions

Light: Full sun to light shade; in Phoenix, morning sun with light afternoon shade helps prevent scorching. Acclimate gradually to stronger sun.

Water: Low water once established. Water deeply, then allow soil to dry completely before watering again. Reduce watering substantially in winter; avoid watering cold, wet soil.

Soil: Very well-drained, gritty or gravelly soil. Use a cactus mix amended with pumice in containers; plant in raised beds or on slopes where native soil drains poorly.

Mature size: Typically 2–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, forming larger colonies over time.

Bloom: Primarily spring through early summer, with occasional repeat blooms during warm weather.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.

Growth rate: Moderate for a cactus during warm weather with appropriate watering.
