The designer recipes

Proven Winners combination planters are pre-designed recipes — a thriller, a filler and a spiller chosen to grow at the same pace and look right together — grown for two months at the nursery and delivered full. They cost more than assembling your own because the work is done; the trade-off is worth it for an entry, a gift or an event, where a finished planter has to look complete the day it arrives.

We commonly carry ‘Hopscotch’ as a drop-in planter and as a hanging basket, and ‘Twilight Hanging Garden’ as a hanging basket for the cool season. Recipes change each season; the care below applies to all of them. The rest of the color tables are on our Annual Flowers & Foliage page.

What we commonly carry

Proven Winners Combos varieties we carry

These are the proven winners combos varieties we commonly carry. Availability changes week to week and season to season, so call (480) 987-3308 or stop in to see what’s on the bench today.

‘Hopscotch’

The ‘Hopscotch’ recipe — Proven Winners’ bright mix of trailing and mounding annuals — grown as a finished planter that drops straight into a decorative pot, or as a full-sized hanging basket for a porch. Heavy when wet — use a rated hook.

‘Twilight Hanging Garden’

‘Twilight Hanging Garden’ — a cool-toned purple, blue and white recipe — for the cool season.

Growing proven winners combos in the low desert

The care tag was written somewhere else. This is the Queen Creek version.

01

When to buy them

Spring recipes run from March to June, longer in afternoon shade; fall recipes run from October through April or May. Cover on a night below 30°F or bring into the garage.

03

Water — daily

A 15-inch basket holds more mix than a 10-inch and dries a little slower, but in Arizona wind both need water daily from the day they arrive and twice a day in warm months. Water until it runs through; lift to check weight. A drip line on a timer is the reliable answer.

05

Hooks and weight

A wet 15-inch basket weighs 25 pounds or more. Hang it from a hook screwed into a joist or beam, not a soffit board or a light shepherd’s hook, and check the hanger clips before hanging.

02

Sun

Morning sun and afternoon shade is right for every combination in the low desert, whatever the tag says; a west-facing exposure in April cooks a 15-inch basket by 3 p.m. An east porch, or the edge of a covered patio.

04

Feeding

Proven Winners plants are bred to be heavy feeders. Use their continuous-release fertilizer or any slow-release at hanging, plus a liquid bloom feed every two weeks. Combos that stop flowering are hungry first, dry second.

06

Grooming and pets

Pinch leggy trailers by a third, remove spent flowers on the few components that aren’t self-cleaning, and turn the basket weekly. Most Proven Winners combo components are non-toxic to pets; ask at the bench about the specific recipe.

Everything the flowers need

Annuals succeed or fail on what’s under them. We stock planting mix and compost for beds, potting mix for containers, bloom fertilizers including Tony’s Magic Mix and Magic Flower, starter fertilizer, drip fittings and frost cloth for the cold nights. The pottery yard has glazed and terracotta pots from 4-inch to whiskey-barrel size, window boxes and hanging baskets, and soil and mulch is sold by the bag or by the yard.

Proven Winners Combos questions we get every week

A pre-designed recipe of three or four Proven Winners annuals — typically a mounding thriller, a filler and a trailing spiller — chosen to grow at the same rate. Recipes change each season; ask at the bench for the current components.

Daily from the day it arrives, twice a day in warm months, until water runs through the bottom.

Morning sun and afternoon shade. Full afternoon sun burns baskets in Queen Creek.

It is hungry — feed a bloom fertilizer every two weeks — or it dried out between waterings.

Twenty-five pounds or more when wet. Use a hook rated for it, into a joist or beam.

A spring combo runs March to June, a fall combo October to May, longer in afternoon shade with regular feeding.
