Care Instructions

Light: Full sun to light shade; light afternoon shade helps prevent scorching during Phoenix summers. Acclimate nursery-grown plants gradually to direct sun.

Water: Low water once established. Water deeply, then let soil dry completely; irrigate sparingly in winter and avoid watering before freezes.

Soil: Excellent drainage is essential; use gritty, mineral-rich cactus soil or plant on a raised mound in heavy desert soil.

Mature size: Individual stems typically reach 2–3 feet tall and wide; established clusters may spread 3–5 feet or more.

Bloom: Small yellow flowers appear around the crown in late spring and summer on mature plants, often after 15–20 years or longer.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.

Growth rate: Slow.
