The four-foot waterfall

Dichondra is the plant that turns a tall pot into a fountain: round, fan-shaped leaves the size of a dime on stems that grow four feet or more in a season and hang straight down. ‘Silver Falls’ and ‘Silver Surfer’ (Dichondra argentea) are the metallic silver forms, tough enough for full sun and summer heat; ‘Emerald Falls’ (D. repens) is a brighter green that wants shade and more water. All root where they touch soil and can double as a groundcover between stepping stones.

We commonly carry ‘Silver Falls’, ‘Emerald Falls’ and ‘Silver Surfer’. The rest of the color tables are on our Annual Flowers & Foliage page.

Growing dichondra in the low desert

The care tag was written somewhere else. This is the Queen Creek version.

01

When to plant

Set out from mid-February, after frost, through May, or in September and October. Silver dichondra grows through summer and often survives a mild winter; green dichondra is happiest in the cool months and struggles in July. Frost browns the stems, and the crown usually resprouts.

03

Water — the silver one dry, the green one moist

Silver dichondra: water when the top inch is dry, every two to three days in summer for a pot, weekly in the cool months; it rots if kept constantly wet. Green dichondra: evenly moist, daily in summer for a pot, every two to three days in spring and fall. Both want a pot with drainage.

05

Feeding and grooming

A balanced fertilizer at half strength every three to four weeks. Trim strands that reach the ground or get tangled; pinching the tips thickens the top. Cuttings root in damp mix or water in a week.

02

Sun — silver in sun, green in shade

‘Silver Falls’ and ‘Silver Surfer’ take full sun, including afternoon sun, and their color is silverest there. ‘Emerald Falls’ wants morning sun and afternoon shade or bright shade all day; it scorches in the sun the silver types enjoy.

04

Pot and placement

Plant at the rim of a tall pot, an urn or a hanging basket so the strands can fall unobstructed — that is what it is for. Three plants around a 14-inch container. In the ground, silver dichondra spreads as a groundcover between pavers in sun; green dichondra in shade.

06

Pests and pets

Flea beetles chew small holes in the leaves in spring; usually cosmetic. Spider mites in dry heat on the green type. Both are non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Everything the flowers need

Annuals succeed or fail on what’s under them. We stock planting mix and compost for beds, potting mix for containers, bloom fertilizers including Tony’s Magic Mix and Magic Flower, starter fertilizer, drip fittings and frost cloth for the cold nights. The pottery yard has glazed and terracotta pots from 4-inch to whiskey-barrel size, window boxes and hanging baskets, and soil and mulch is sold by the bag or by the yard.
