Light: Full sun to light shade; light afternoon shade helps young plants cope with intense Phoenix summer heat. Acclimate nursery plants gradually to direct sun.

Water: Low water once established. Water deeply but infrequently during hot, dry weather, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering sharply in winter and skip irrigation after substantial rain.

Soil: Very well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil. Tolerates alkaline desert soil; use a raised mound where drainage is poor.

Mature size: Typically 3–6 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide; older plants may spread farther.

Bloom: Spring to early summer on established plants.

Evergreen / deciduous: Evergreen.

Growth rate: Slow to moderate, depending on moisture and growing conditions.
