Description
A tropical-looking, rhizomatous perennial with broad, banana-like leaves and bright yellow flowers. Yellow garden cannas are often hybrids sold under Canna indica.
Light: Full sun to partial shade; morning sun with afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch in Phoenix summers.
Water: Moderate to high water needs; irrigate deeply and frequently enough to keep soil evenly moist during active growth. Reduce watering substantially during winter dormancy.
Soil: Rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Amend Phoenix soils with compost and mulch to conserve moisture and cool roots.
Mature size: Typically 3–6 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, depending on cultivar; rhizomes gradually spread into larger colonies.
Bloom: Late spring through fall, with repeated flowering in warm weather when adequately watered and fed.
Evergreen / deciduous: Herbaceous perennial; frost usually kills foliage, while rhizomes generally overwinter outdoors in Zone 9b. May retain foliage during frost-free winters.
Growth rate: Fast during warm weather with adequate water and nutrients.
